Rotary Urges Conservation and Protection of Lake Bunyonyi
The Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi has stepped up efforts to conserve and protect Lake Bunyonyi through sustainable projects focusing on water, sanitation, environmental protection, and community empowerment in the Kigezi region.

The Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi has underscored the importance of conserving and protecting Lake Bunyonyi and its surrounding environment through water, sanitation, and community development initiatives.

Speaking during the official visit of Rotary District 9214 Governor, Rtn Christian Kyeyune Kahoya, held at Cephas Inn in Kabale Municipality, Club President Rtn Jean Tukamushaba said the club’s focus is to ensure that the lake remains clean and its waters safe for human use.

Tukamushaba said the club’s mission, “Empowering Lake Bunyonyi Communities Through Sustainable Development and Global Fellowship,” guides all its projects and partnerships.

He outlined key objectives, including implementing sustainable community projects, promoting economic empowerment, and enhancing access to quality education.

He noted that the club has already implemented several impactful interventions, such as installing a 10,000-litre water tank at Lake Bunyonyi Primary School, which benefits 750 pupils, 12 teachers, and nearby residents.

At the Harutindo Market, the main landing site on Lake Bunyonyi, the club is refurbishing a public toilet that will serve more than 1,500 people who attend weekly market days and travellers who use the lake for transport.

The club is also promoting proper waste disposal around the market, hotels, and local communities by training youth and women’s groups in waste management practices.

Tukamushaba said the Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi measures its success through impactful projects and increased visibility.

He added that the club plans to partner with the Kigezi Corporate League to expand networking opportunities and strengthen membership recruitment.

The club also operates as a cashless and paperless organization, promoting cohesion among members through welfare and buddy group initiatives.

District Governor Kyeyune commended the club for its commitment to protecting Lake Bunyonyi and improving community wellbeing.

She said her visit to Western Uganda aims at empowering Rotary Clubs in the region, monitoring their projects, appreciating their achievements, and offering guidance for growth.

“I began my visit with the Mghinga Rotary Club yesterday and will continue visiting all clubs in the region,” Kyeyune said.

She also urged clubs to prioritize membership growth, noting that a strong membership base is essential for Rotary’s service mission.

During the fellowship, Rtn. Canon Joshua Mutekanga became the first member of the Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi to contribute to the Rotary International Foundation.

The club also inducted a new member, Daniella Murungi, marking a step forward in its membership development.
